After 16 years of marriage to Elizabeth Avellan, From Dusk till Dawn director Robert Rodriguez became involved with Rose McGowan during the shooting of Grindhouse and separated from the mother of his five children. To make things worse, he filed for divorce while Avellan was pregnant.
His affair on set was well known among cast and crew, and they were often seen together in public. Though reps for their Troublemaker film studio claimed the couple split long before the Grindhouse production began, Rodriguez went public with his new relationship at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
Rodriguez and Avellan remained friends after their divorce, agreeing to raise their kids together and even continue working on some joint projects. Here’s what she said:
“Robert and I have been such good partners for 18 years. So many things haven’t changed in general, just in how we handle our personal life with our children. The only thing we’re not is married anymore.”
The director’s relationship with McGowan, on the other hand, didn’t last long and the two split in 2009.
