In October 2009, talk show host David Letterman confessed to the audience of his show that he was unfaithful to his wife after he became the victim of a blackmail attempt by Robert J. “Joe” Halderman, a producer of the CBS true crime journalism series 48 Hours. Namely, Halderman threatened to reveal that Letterman had sex with several of his female employees and asked for $2 million in exchange for his silence.
Even though the extortionist was arrested, Letterman decided to come clean and admit that he was romantically involved with his staff. He also devoted a part of his show to issue a public apology to the people working with him, and his wife, saying she had been ‘horribly hurt by my behavior.’
His wife Regina Lasco, whom Letterman began dating way back in the 1980’s, forgave him and remained by his side.
