Maya Thompson is the mother of Ronan Thompson, a boy who was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma on August 12th, 2010. Unfortunately, he lost the battle around May 2011, but his mother was writing a blog all the while, documenting every single struggle her son was going through.
Taylor Swift found the blog, and after reading through all the entries, she wrote a tribute, which she simply named “Ronan”. In fact, Swift even credits Thompson as a co-writer on the track, as she would read the blog every single night.
She first performed the song at a September 2012 Stand Up to Cancer telethon, and now for the second time at Glendale, Arizona, where she brought the audience to tears. Swift made a short announcement before she sang the song:
There’s a woman here tonight named Maya Thompson. I wouldn’t know half as much as I know about childhood cancer and childhood cancer research if she hadn’t shared her story about her son Ronan.
