Athlete Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by a South African appeals court. Pistorius shot four times through a locked toilet door and delivered lethal wounds to Steenkamp. Currently under house arrest after spending one year of his original five-year sentence in prison, he will have to return to court in order to be re-sentenced for murder.
It was falsely reported earlier that the court had ruled the manslaughter verdict previously reached would remain. The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the lower court did not apply the rule of dolus eventualis correctly, or in other words – whether Pistorius knew that death would be a result of his actions. The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years. Also, no one can be placed under house arrest for more than five years, so Pistorius will have to go back to prison.
