Actress Naomi Watts said she knew “there were problems” with her ‘Diana, Princess of Wales’ biopic movie, as she tried to explain the movie’s box office failure.
The star portrayed the tragic Diana character in the movie which failed to impress the U.S. audience on both sides of the Atlantic. It was released in 2013, but earned only $65,000 (£43,600) in its opening weekend.
The actress, disappointed with the failure, has now opened up about the fact that the movie wasn’t a success, even comparing it to a “sinking ship”.
She revealed her amazement by the character and the story at the beginning to Australia’s Harper’s Bazaar magazine.
She explained, “I got seduced by the fantastic character. Diana did a lot of things that had positive and negative results. She was multifaceted… But ultimately there were problems (with the film) and it ended up taking a direction that was not the one I was hoping for. With risk there is every chance it’s going to fail. If you have to go down with that sinking ship, so be it.”
The film has a focus on Princess Diana’s love life during her young age and ends with the tragic and still mysterious car crash in France in 1997.
