Mindy Kaling’s brother, Vijay Chokal-Ingam released a book titled “Almost Black” which sparked a lot of controversy.
In the book Vijay describes his experience of pretending to be a black man in order to get admitted to medical school. He explains that he believed that certain medical schools practice affirmative action policies that give advantage to black students in the admittance process. Vijay even went so far as to shave his head, trim his “long Indian eyelashes”, and use his middle name, JoJo, in order to pass as a black man.
His sister’s reaction to his “experiment” was not kind. Mindy’s rep told US Weekly that the two have been estranged for years:
Mindy has been estranged from her brother for years. She was not aware of his decision to apply to medical school under a different name and race.
