The World Music Awards had to kick off more than one hour late as the opening act Mariah Carey was late to take the stage on Tuesday, May 27.
Mariah was scheduled to open the show in Monaco, performing her new song Meteorite. She was supposed to perform prior to picking up the Pop Icon Award. However, she was around 60 minutes late, which prompted organizers to push the event’s schedule back.
Editors at Britain’s The Sun newspaper have reported stars such as Miley Cyrus were kept waiting. The singer even poked fun at Mariah’s tardiness during her acceptance speech as she was picking up her prize.
She said, “Thank God! I thought this party was never going to get started.”
Miley, who came with her younger brother Braison as her date for the gala at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club, was named the World’s Best Female Artist.
Her much talked about video for the song Wrecking Ball landed the award for World’s Best Pop Video.
Latin Legend was Ricky Martin, and Welsh singer Dame Shirley Bassey picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The evening ended with Miley’s emotional rendition of Wrecking Ball, and other performers included Jason DeRulo, Fall Out Boy, Flo Rida and British rapper Tinie Tempah.
The complete list of 2014 winners will be disclosed when the show airs in the U.S. on Wednesday, May 28.
