Can you guess who was named the most successful songwriter of 2013 in the UK? We have no idea whether you’ve guessed right, but in case you haven’t, the correct answer is hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Music Week magazine conducted a survey and listed the Seattle-based duo at the top of the list. Their result was based on the fact that their hits “Thrift Shop”, “Can’t Hold Us” and “Same Love” sold 1.6 million copies.
To create the chart, magazine executives looked at how much credit songwriters were awarded for the 100 biggest selling tracks in the last year. Their calculation landed Macklemore and Lewis at the top, ahead of Bruno Mars and Ryan Tedder.
Pharrell Williams, who took a part in writing the controversial hit “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, took the second place. Third songwriter on the list is a member of the trio of writers known as The Smeezingtons, Bruno Mars. He’s also behind hits such as “When I Was Your Man” and “Locked Out of Heaven”.
Ryan Tedder landed on fourth place due to his success of One Republic’s single “Counting Stars”. His work on Ellie Goulding’s single “Burn” garnered him additional points, while Passenger was the only Brit within the top five with his track “Let Her Go”.
