Actor Kevin Spacey called out a member in the audience in the middle of his performance in the play Clarence Darrow. Apparently, a ringing phone upset the actor when his powerful monologue was interrupted by it.
The actor is currently in the midst of a two-and-a-half run at The Old Vic theatre in London. On Wednesday, June 4, Kevin had to improvise when a ring tone interrupted him during one of passionate scenes.
The person in the audience tried ti ignore the ringing phone, but the actor lost his nerve, stayed in the character and yelled, “If you don’t answer that, I will!”
His reaction provoked a round of applause from the audience.
Other actors who have taken similar action over mobile phones include the late Richard Griffiths, who famously scolded a woman whose mobile phone kept ringing during a performance of Heroes at the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre in 2005.
In 2009, Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman paused their performance in A Steady Rain on Broadway to ask an audience member to answer their ringing phone.
This is the third time for the actor to portray a lawyer and civil rights hero. He took on the one-man play to mark celebration of a decade-long stint as the artistic director of the play The Old Vic.
In autumn 2015, the actor will step down from the position and director Matthew Warchus will replace him.
