Twitter executives must have been shocked on Sunday when Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres managed to shut down the most popular social media site with a selfie.
The host gathered several celebrities for a selfie in order to set a new record for the most re-tweeted photograph.
Needless to say, she did it.
She posted a selfie together with front-row stars of the Oscars, including Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, among others. That’s right, they all managed to squeeze into the shot.
The host hoped to set a new world record for most re-tweets as she gathered a group of A-listers to pose for Twitter. Bradley Cooper took the snap, while the caption read: “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever.”
Ellen encouraged the audience to re-tweet the image.
Within minutes, the photo gained more than 500,000 re-tweets and 300,000 “favorites”. Such website traffic was too much for poor Twitter that shut down almost immediately.
However, it was up within a half an hour, topping the snap count to 2.2 million retweets, which is the current record.
