When female celebrities experience wardrobe malfunctions during performances or red carpet appearances, the entire world expects them to immediately hide their shameful nudity and put everything back into its place as soon as possible. Of course, everyone also expects them to deeply apologize for exposing their insulting body parts and endure days of embarrassing tabloid stories.
On the other hand, when male stars accidentally reveal too much body, their private parts included, they aren’t the least bit humiliated, on the contrary; they are praised for exposing their body parts and the Internet takes a humorous approach to the entire incident.
Take Lenny Kravitz’s wardrobe malfunction as one of the most recent examples of sexist double standards that are apparently omnipresent in the world of showbiz. During a concert in Sweden, the 51-year-old rocker unintentionally flashed his junk and the Internet went crazy. Since Lenny obviously forgot to wear underwear and his leather pants split right at the crotch during the gig, the entire planet had the opportunity to see his manhood. The press, other celebrities and fans were and continue to be delighted by what they saw, speculating as to whether or not the rocker’s penis was erect or flaccid. However, social media has gone even further, wondering whether the sparkly thing on the base of his penis was a piercing or some king of cock ring.
To make things even more interesting, Kravitz seems to be super amused by all the theories – he tweeted a creepy message from Aerosmith’s singer Steven Tyler, which read, ‘’Dude…No underwear and pierced…Fuck me…You never showed me that shit.’’
Completely ignoring the question of why Tyler would have expected Kravitz to share such information with him in the first place, we have to admit that Kravitz’s reaction to the situation is nothing short of praiseworthy – not only is he not ashamed of his nudity, but he also doesn’t feel the need to apologize to anyone for having a penis.
That being said, we also have to point out to the hypocrisy and double standards that obviously rule the Internet. While everyone’s reaction to Kravitz’s wardrobe malfunction was absolutely amazing, we can’t help but wonder how people would react if the exact same thing happened to a woman?
Anyone remembers Nipplegate? Well, in case you forgot, Janet Jackson infamously exposed her nipple during the 2003 Super Bowl and she basically had to apologize to every single living creature for having nipples. Moreover, when it was discovered (and photographed) that Anne Hathaway didn’t wear underwear at a Les Miserables premiere in 2012, the press was quick to blame her for going commando.
Last but not least, when Britney Spears proudly exclaimed, ‘’My pussy was hanging out’’ during a now-notorious 2009 Tampa show, no one praised her for her honesty and boldness; instead, everyone called her ‘trailer trash.’
