Famous rapper Drake, and a known sports-crazed persona, has just landed a new gig as the host of the 2014 ESPY Awards. His love for sports landed him a role of the global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors basketball team and will be hosting prize giving event on July 16 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Canadian star took to Twitter.com to announce the happy news, and wrote, “Honored to be this year’s @ESPYS host @espn 7.16.2014…”
An ESPY spokesperson said, “Started from the bottom, now … @Drake’s HOSTING THE 2014 ESPYS! RT (re-tweet) if you’re excited to see him take the stage.”
‘The Started From the Bottom’ star is not the first musician to welcome the awards show. Previously, the singer Justin Timberlake has served as a host in 2008. Jamie Foxx had that role in 2003 and 2004.
An ESPY Award (short for ‘Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award’) is a recognition presented by the American cable television network ESPN to praise individual, team athletic achievement and other sports-related performance during the calendar year preceding a given annual ceremony.

Because of the ceremony’s rescheduling prior to the 2002 iteration thereof, awards presented in 2002 were for achievement and performances during the seventeen-plus months previous.
As the similarly styled Grammy (for music), Emmy (for television), Academy Award (for film), and Tony (for theatre), the ESPYs are hosted by a contemporary celebrity, even though the style is more relaxed and self-referential than many other awards shows, with comedic sketches usually included.
