Famous American period drama Boardwalk Empire is about to end after its forthcoming fifth season. The series received widespread critical acclaim mostly for its visual style.
Network bosses announced on Thursday that the period drama set during the Prohibition era is coming to an end. The series is produced by Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg with Steve Buscemi in the leading role.
During the press tour at the Television Critics Association, the creator of the show Terence Winter said, “We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire. After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”
Michael Lombardo, president of programming at HBO, stated, “It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages.”
Boardwalk Empire has won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama in 2011, two Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2011 and 2012, and 17 Emmys, including the directing award for Scorsese.
The final episode of Boardwalk Empire is scheduled to air in autumn 2014.
