James Cameron and George Lucas were the first Hollywood legends who paid tribute to the former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who passed away yesterday at the age of 68.
“Tom’s passion for everything he did made him an inspiration to work with. His boundless enthusiasm for Star Wars earned him an honorary Jedi master title. He was unique in the industry and will be missed,” said Lucas. Sherak was hailed as “honorary Jedi master” by Lucas because he supported him and helped him conceptualize the Star Wars series.
The director of Titanic and Avatar James Cameron added, “Tom was a mentor to me and a good friend for almost three decades. He embodied the heart and soul of movies – entertainment and showmanship – timeless values in our business… I will miss his spirit, his sense of fun, his love of cinema – but most of all, his friendship.”
The Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, tweeted on his account, “Devastated to learn of the passing of a great Angeleno Tom Sherak. Proud to have worked with him and lucky to have known this amazing man.”
