While speaking to an audience of entertainment luminaries, Spike Lee claimed that it’s extremely difficult to succeed in Hollywood if you happen to be a black person. In fact, the filmmaker went as far as to say that it’s more likely for a black person to become President of the United states than the head of a studio or network.

He stated his opinion on the matter on Saturday when he was awarded an Oscar at the seventh annual Governers Awards, which also honored Debbie Reynolds and Gena Rowlands. Lee praised Cheryl Boone Issacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts for trying to accomplish something that needs to be done after Isaacs called on the industry powers present to take action toward “recognizing a broad cross-section of talent”.

Isaacs also honored the victims of the recent Paris terrorist attack by opening the Awards ceremony with condolences for the victims of the assault.
