Cuban-American actress Elizabeth Pena died from complications relating to alcohol abuse, according to her death certificate, obtained by TMZ on Oct. 22.
The report reveals that the cause of Pena’s death was cirrhosis of the liver “due to alcohol.”
She suffered from cirrhosis for months, but things became critical shortly before she passed away on Oct. 14. The Modern Family star experienced acute gastrointestinal bleeding during her final hours, which caused her heart to stop.
The death certificate also lists “cardiopulmonary arrest”, “cardiogenic shock” and “acute gastrointestinal bleeding” as the three other causes of death.
Last week, Pena’s manager, Gina Rugolo, said Pena died of natural causes after a brief illness.
“She was our star. She was my star. We celebrated her triumphs. We sweated through her struggles.”
Elizabeth died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, leaving behind a husband and two children.
