Actor Neil Patrick Harris had an excited fan in the audience during his Broadway show, which provoked him to swear on stage.
He portrays a transgender glam rocker in Hedwid and the Angry Inch, a legendary musical written by John Cameron Mitchell.
During one of his recent shows, he had a fan that couldn’t contain her appreciation of Neil. She even interrupted the show by shouting, “I love you Neil!”
The actor was clearly not flattered by the fan, so he turned to a foul-mouthed response, shouting back, “I’m doing something up here, ¬motherf**ker!”
Page Six of the New York Post reports his response was well accepted among the audience and ended with a round of applause.
The actor turned to Twitter.com to explain that it wasn’t him who attacked the woman, but his character. He has done that immediately after the news of his outburst went viral.
He provided a link to a Gossip Cop article explaining that he turned the fan’s comment into an entertaining addition to the improvisational show.
“The response to the fan yelling was actually done in character — Neil as Hedwig, not as though Neil stopped the show to respond out of character,” a representative said.
Harris recently wrapped up his nine-year role as womanizer Barney on How I Met Your Mother.
He’ll be next seen in the anticipated big screen version of Gone Girl, based on the bestseller by Gillian Flynn, alongside Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
