Seal is famous for his beautiful voice and that trademark scar. But, that infamous mark is a battle wound from his fight with lupus. He suffers from discoid lupus erythematosus, a special type of lupus that affects the skin, causing sores and hair loss.
Ten percent of people with discoid lupus will go on to develop systemic lupus. He was diagnosed as a teen. DLE caused Seal’s cheek scars, as well as significant scalp involvement and causing hair loss. Now, the singer’s condition has been in remission for some time, though his scars remain.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Seal told the magazine, “I got really depressed about [the scars] at first, as you can understand. Now I really like them.” Seal now says he’s enjoying them, “If I could design something, I don’t think I could do it better.”
