21. Cynthia McFadden
One of the most recognizable faces of ABC News, Cynthia McFadden is another celebrity on our list who struggled with Crohn’s disease, an autoimmune disease which affects the bowels and which can cause serious damage and life-threatening complications if left untreated.
Cynthia was diagnosed with the disease back in her college days, when she and her friends jokingly referred to her disease as George. She says it was a more elegant way of addressing a disease that can cause severe diarrhea attacks.
Cynthia experienced a particularly severe episode in the late 1970s when she suffered a bout of internal bleeding. She had to undergo surgery and she had 15 feet of her intestine removed. These days, she works hard to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease.
