21. John Goodman
Everybody’s favorite John Goodman was inspired to lose weight after seeing a rather unflattering image of himself whilst shooting a Santa Claus movie.
Now a former alcoholic, he forced himself to quit the booze and stop smoking. Way to go John!
John Stephen Goodman was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 20, 1952. After an injury ended his college football career, he decided to become a professional actor and left Missouri for New York City in 1975.
He earned money as waiter and at the same time went to auditions. Goodman is best known for his role as Dan Conner on the television series Roseanne (1988–1997), for which he won a Best Actor Golden Globe Award in 1993.
He opened up about his struggle with pounds in an interview for “People” magazine: “I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste. It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next … I wanted to live life better.”
He has stated that exercising and keeping a journal of food he consumed are what helped him keep the weight off.
Mackie Shilstone, a health coach who helped him lose weight told People that: “He remembers what it feels like to be extremely heavy and it’s something he doesn’t want again.” She continues: “John is very agile. When I see him running I get out of the way! He can be a different type of actor now. He can take on athletic parts.”
