8. Brian May
Brian May is one of the best guitarists in history, but, he was also a little bit geeky as a teenager.
In the 70’s, he got a Bachelor of Sciences degree with honors from the Imperial College of London. He also published a scientific paper, Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe.
It’s seems that he wasn’t only a great guitarist, but also a great man.
Besides being musician, singer, songwriter, and of course, the founder of the legendary band Queen, Brian is also an astrophysicist. A PhD, that is. Yes, the rock star can tell you all about the facts of the universe, unfathomable for us regular folk.
A born Londoner, May attended Hampton Grammar School, where he got three A-Levels (Physics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics), and got his BS degree in maths and physics. He defended his PhD thesis in astrophysics on Motions of Interplanetary Dust at the Imperial College in 2007.
As a successful PhD student, he had to put his studies on hold as Queen reached for the stars, and became one of England’s most legendary bands. He did not give up his academic carrier, as he later got his degree and was also the Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University, from 2008 to 2013.
The Queen paid her respect to the band that carries her name after she appointed him the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005. May was decorated for his services to the music industry and for charity work he did for the community and the world.
As an avid animal rights activist, he’s also the vice-president of RSPCA, a charity fund for saving England’s wildlife. He wrote two books, the sequel to his work on the universe, called The Cosmic Tourist, and a book on 19th century 3D photography (Stereophotography) called A Village Lost and Found.
