12. Danica McKeller
Danica might be one of the smartest celebrities out there. Not only does she have a UCLA math degree, but she’s used it to write four books about how mathematics can be fun for teenagers.
We’re still not sure if she managed to prove that math can be fun, but either way, great job Danica.
Her books have, nonetheless, been NY Times bestsellers, one of which has a cute name Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail. McKeller created a book that finds similarities between factors and friendship bracelets, multiplications and shoes, and rates and face cream. How crazy is that? But, apparently, it may be helpful for girls who are not very keen on algebra. Anyway, the book is for boys, as well.
The beautiful mathematician started her career when she was only nine in 1984, with appearances in television commercials.
In 1987, she made appearances in two episodes of The Twilight Zone. Her big break happened when she got a role in The Wonder Years as Becky Slater. When the show ended, she went on to pursue the degree in maths at UCLA. She impressed her mentor in her senior year, professor Lincoln Hayes. He was so impressed with her wits, that he asked her and one other fellow student to help him finish a project. The result was amazing! The TV series and movie star can proudly claim a name of the Charles-McKellar-Winn mathematical theorem.
She graduated, summa cum laude, with a B.S. in mathematics from UCLA in 1998. Being a dedicated advocate for maths, she has spoken before Congress about the importance of women in mathematics. Such an awesome role model. Hopefully, her enthusiasm will bring more interest in math. Go Danica!
