9. Charlize Theron: Monster
We all remember that day, the day we thought we lost our precious Charlize.
Many people refused to believe that she is really in the movie because of the drastic change in appearance. The weight alone should be enough, but as a true professional actor, Charlize changed everything about her and became serial killer Aileen Wuornos, for which she won the Silver Bear, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Academy Award for Best Actress.
The movie got huge approval for the complete transformation of the attractive actress. She had to play a murderous psychopath, a former prostitute from Florida who killed six men, a dangerous drug addict, with antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder, who was executed in 2002.
Theron had to gain 30 pounds and wore prosthetic teeth. Some critics even called her performance an embodiment and one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema.
Patty Jenkins, who wrote and directed the movie, stated that she knew Charlize Theron was perfect for the role of Aileen Wuornos when she saw her play the role in The Devil’s Advocate. The young director believed Charlize would be perfect for the role after she saw a close up of her shedding tears in The Devil’s Advocate.
The depressing movie Monster offers no happy ending, no silver lining… except for the harsh reality of the murderous villain. However, the demanding role had more to it, since Charlize made her character move many people as sometimes people become monsters due to surrounding factors, so she really helped see the monster from its own lens.
The drama completely changed Charlize we remember as a sexy seducer, nobody was able to tell it was her. She did a great job and returned to her original hotness. Although Kate Winslet was the original choice for the challenging role, we find it beyond imagination that anyone could have done the better job than Theron.
