8. Jared Leto: Dallas Buyers Club & Chapter 27

When we said that you will not be able to recognize these actors, we meant it!

Jared Leto, who actually gained a lot of weight to play Mark David Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon, 67 pounds to be precise, is a very emotional and devoted actor, who isn’t afraid to get a little dirty for the role. For his part as a transvestite drug addict suffering from AIDS in Dallas Byers Club, he lost 40 pounds (around 20 kilos).

Among many awards the Hollywood nominated celluloid has got, Leto’s got his official best actor in a supporting role acclaim. The handsome heart-breaker and the frontman of 30 Seconds to Mars claims he had a difficult time losing weight for the role, but he the words of Meryl Streep who thanked her makeup artists for the unequivocal role in her prize, inspired Leto to accept the role of makeup in the shape-shifting process.

However, Leto believes that most of it has to be in the change of character, in giving yourself entirely to your role. He tells The Japan Star, “See, I didn’t want to just let being thinner do my acting for me. I wanted to go beyond that — to be weak. Not just to look weak, to feel weak and wasted. But not down and defeated. Never defeated. I didn’t want the makeup or clothes to be a mask to hide behind. I wanted them to be a surface that helps reveal what’s inside, including this very strong will to live, and to celebrate being alive — which we should all do.”

He claimed that losing weight to get down to 114 pounds represented a drastic shift in his life. He had less trouble gaining a lot of pounds for the part of Chapman.
