7. Matthew Mcconaughey: Dallas Buyers Club
This Hollywood hunk lost a lot of weight to look like Ron Woodroof, who had AIDS. Some of the scenes have shown him almost nude and we were like “wut, that’s that muscular and charming guy from Sahara?” Yes, yes it is.
The transformation was well worth it since he received numerous awards for this movie. Dallas Byers Club has brought him an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the best performance by an actor in a leading role, among numerous other festival awards.
The actor lost around 40 pounds to make the best possible performance of Ron Woodfoof, an electrician diagnosed with HIV in 1985. The plot follows the ill man who’s given 30 more days to live.
After the experimental drug trials have failed to bring any success, Woodroof tries to take his life in his own hands, and go against U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Having been successful in his 30-day ordeal, the ill-stricken man learns how to help others who also reached the stadium of being HIV-positive.
As McConaughey has a recognizable muscular appearance, it was quite a task to slim down for the role in Dallas Byers Club, although he didn’t reach the record braking Christian Bale loss of reducing his body mass to 120 pounds (54 kilos), who made a drastic change in looks for the movie The Machinist (2004).
When the reporters asked McConaughey about how he prepared himself for the role of Woodruff, he answered that “I had a real man [to draw from]. I had his diary from two years before he had HIV. I got his humor from that. I got his humanity from that.”
The physical side and the weight loss may have been the crucial factor for winning Hollywood’s most prominent golden statue. McConaoughey claims he was on a strict diet for the role, as he was irritated and hungry all the time.
