4. Tim Curry: IT

Taking yet another spot on our list, diverse Tim took to the fancy dress wardrobe once again, but this time to become the scary clown Pennywise in Steven King’s classic TV miniseries IT (1990).

Based on King’s 1138 page horror novel, the movie was so long due to the desire of the author to have all the favorite villains in one piece. Along with Legend (1985), Curry has earned his master of disguise title fair and square.

Having an impish personality, he’s always the finest fit for remaining in children’s nightmares for a long time. Nobody keeps record on how many children still carry traumatic memories from the Curry’s performance of Stephen’s King’s infamous clown, called It.

Especially notable is the cult movie scene when Curry calls from the drain the little boy who lost his paper boat. Him saying “Hiya Georgie!” in that sultry voice of his, with his sharp accent, long white forehead, sad-happy expressions of a lunatic, make a child watching the movie feel the shivers, and the sharp teeth and an insane grin make sure many children develop clown-phobia from then on.

If it weren’t for the cult Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Legend, this scene would cement Curry’s road into stardom. Tim Curry himself was very reluctant to take this role at first, since he didn’t want to put on any more makeup, after the burdening movie Legend, and it was difficult to persuade him to put on makeup one more time.

As the 1985 movie required 6.5 hours of makeup on every set, and 1.5 hours to remove it, Curry was not happy to return to the difficulties such masks entail. Making a compromise, Tommy Lee Wallace reduced the complexity and amount of makeup to its minimum, and since Curry’s performance was so impressive and distinct, a lot of makeup wasn’t necessary anyway.
