3. Howie Mandel: Maurice, Little Monsters
America’s Got Talent judge Howie Mandel played Maurice, a troublesome blue monster who lived under Fred Savage’s bed in the little known 1989 cult classic, Little Monsters.
The movie was directed by Richard Greenberg, and the star of the comedy movie was Fred Savage. The plotline revolves around the kid Savage befriending a monster that lives under his bed.
As the story moves on, the likeable monster becomes one of the boy’s best friends. Afterwards, the couple goes on to menace the other neighborhood children as they pull pranks on them. Mandel’s character shows little Savage the entire new world of fun, jokes, and troublesome behavior.
The light comedy, endeavors to explain what really happens under the bed, and how come children are always to blame for someone else’s misbehavior. Little Monsters caught a lot of influence from Beetlejuice, which was a true ht at the time, since both deal with the monster-under-the-bed theme. Mandel’s horned-protruding and sharp-toothed appeal accomplished great transformation in the film.
The screenplay included his limbs transforming into animate beings, as well. The crew members’ creativity is evident when Maurice’s right hand turns into a dog that actually chews a poor little girl’s homework, or when it urinates in the school bully’s lunchbox. Little Monsters was rated PG for language, crudeness and some visuals that might be slightly problematic for the youngest audience, but the film was planned for abundance of special effects, unfortunately, with not a budget that could cover it all.
Later Disney-Pixar movie Monsters, Inc. is said to have been influenced a lot by the original, also based on the organization set to scare the children as the light goes off. Howie Mandel, the Canadian actor, and a stand-up comedian has acted and given voices in many other movies favored by children, Gremlins, for instance.
