13. Rooney Mara: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

A humble and shy girl who, before this role, played mostly graceful ladies, became an outcast with a lot of piercings and bad attitude for a role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

She actually had her nipples pierced to make the whole thing more believable. We are not certain that we would be able to do the same thing for just one role…

Mara pursued her transformation very seriously, as she got the piercings in a series of sessions in Brooklyn and Sweden. Even though she subsequently removed the ear, nose, eyebrow and lip piercings, she kept the right nipple piercing for possible sequels.

“It’s not something I want to ever get repierced,” she said. “So I’m going to keep it in.”

She had to shave her eyebrows completely, which she believes helped her to make the transformation: “The eyebrows changed the way I looked the most, but I would say it freaked me out for maybe two minutes then I was fine.”

Also, the preparations for the part included her training kickboxing for a year, ride a motorcycle, and skateboard for the role.

She had to learn all this for the role of the pierced, tattooed, computer hacker, called Lisbeth Salander. The fictional character was created after the book of the Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson.

Mara dyed her hair black for the role, and had a makeup to look like a pale, skinny woman, a wasp tattoo on her left ankle, a Chinese symbol on her lip, and a rose on her left calf. She also has a tattoo on her left shoulder blade.

In 2012, Rooney Mara received an Academy Award for the role in the movie. She also made notable appearances in The Social Network (2010), Side Effects (2013), and Her (2013).
