11. Tom Hardy: Bronson

Not only did Tom put on over 40 pounds for this role, but he had a very strict exercise regiment to better fit the part.

A movie based on a true story of Charles Bronson, an inmate currently serving a life sentence in England.

Regiment consisted of literally thousands of push-ups and other exercises that can be done in solitary to better portray the physique of the real Bronson. The most infamous British prisoner received a seven-year prison sentence after an armed robbery in a post office, back in 1972, only to get away with £26.

The former fist fighter, and the prison legend, is still in prison after 35 years, due to numerous assaults on the staff, and organizing protests inside.

Hardy’s fascination with Bronson stems from the dynamic life of Britain’s most dangerous prisoner, as well his old school code, and the hatred towards rapists and pedophiles. In order to gain the muscles for the part, Hardy had to do tons of push-ups, and he had to resort to a specific kind of training.

The job also required a lot of weight gain, on the forearms, chest and neck. At the end, he looked like he missed all the leg days in the gym.

The young actor says “I was a mess after ‘Bronson’. I got really fat. I was a real road crash. So my personal trainer friend Pnut had the problem of getting the rust off me. By the time I went to Pittsburgh to film ‘Warrior’ I had two hours of boxing, two hours of muay thai, two hours of jiu jitsu, two hours of choreography and two hours of weight lifting a day, every day for eight weeks. I don’t know how people do that every day.”
