10. Christian Bale: American Hustle
It is sufficient to say that the great Robert De Niro could not recognize him on the set.
They tried to explain to him that that’s Christian, but he was so shocked that he couldn’t believe it. When Bale took of the make-up and everything else (well, not everything, the weight was still there and clothes of course) he reintroduced himself and it went great.
Complete with a hump, a horrible combover and a lot of pounds, Christian Bale really did not look like Batman in this movie. After dropping down to the amazingly skinny statue for The Machinist (2004), Bale super-sized himself for 2014 nomination, gaining 40 pounds for the role of Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle.
The Internet has been full of pictures of Bale’s amazing power to transform his body weight, so the producers new there would be no problem for Bale to put some more flab. To get the bulging fat for his turn as a soft-bodied hustler, the actor went on a food-frenzy, devouring mostly what’s considered as junk food– especially cheeseburgers.
The famous Dark Knight also undertook a massive change in the movie The Fighter, as in other movies during the years. He claims he’s never been approached by the director to ask for this, but was his own will and suggestion.
The Oscar winner has been approached by many colleague actors to ask for advice on losing weight for the roles. After gaining weight for the nominated American Hustle, Bales jokes “I always forget the promise I made to never do it (again).”
Bale also says that the director hadn’t envisioned or believed that he would actually do it, but he felt in love with the look of Mel Weinberg, the real Irving Rosenfeld, whom he impersonated in the movie. He really loved his comb over and the round features that he felt he had to achieve, not by prosthetics and makeup, but with honest-to-god weight gain.
