9. Dev Patel
Patel’s family are Gujarati Hindus (British Indians) who live in the house with him – the same house Patel grew up in, in Rayners Lane, west London. It’s kind of surprising to see him land a job in the acting industry since his mother is a care worker and his father an accountant. On the other hand, it’s not so uncommon that unusual children from normal, quiet families turn to showbiz and excel at it. He also has an older sister, who works in business marketing. “She’s the quiet one,” said Patel in an interview.
Patel speaks with great affection about his parents, who are now in their 50s, explaining that they put him into every extra-curricular activity as a child they possibly could in order to channel his excess energy. Taekwondo, judo, karate – Patel competed for eight years in tournaments around the country before his mother came up with the idea to introduce him to acting. Well, we can only say “Good job, mom” because he was an instant success.
