14. Miles Davis

If you’re reading this list and you don’t know who Miles Davis is, you really, really ought to take a listen to his Some Kind of Blue album, and learn what real jazz feels like.

Miles owed a lot to his father, Miles Henry Davis, who gave his son a trumpet when Miles was just 13, and even arranged for lessons with a local musician. Combined with Miles’ talent, things exploded from there, and Miles found himself playing with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker for several weeks when he was just 18 (he became a professional performer at the age of 16).

During his famous Blue Period in 1954, Miles was notorious for his excessive drug use. He realized that the only way to rise from the abyss he plunged himself into was to return home and seek comfort from his father, who, luckily, accepted Miles and allowed him to stay for as long as he wanted. Miles locked himself in his room for a full year and formed his first great quintet immediately after.
