9. Jason Collins
Being an athlete is difficult enough, but being a gay athlete in the NBA is a completely different story. Jason Collins plays for Washington Wizards and he had the ‘honor’ to be the first active male professional athlete in a major North American team sport to come out publicly as gay.
He is currently looking to renew his contract with the Wizards.
Some of his fellow sportsmen and other celebrities supported him about his coming out. They mostly used their Twitter profiles to share the support and give praise to the courage of his friend.
His Wizard teammate wrote on his Twitter profile, after Jason has got out, “I am proud of my brother @jasoncollins34. Great teammate and mentor!”
Jan Vesely also commented, “I appreciate you for coming out. I am sure it takes a lot of courage to do so. I am proud of you. Great teammate! Take care @jasoncollins34.”
Even former President, Bill Clinton, used his profile to show support to his friend, “I’m proud to call Jason Collins a friend,” he wrote.
Proud Jason told Sports Illustrated, “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.
I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, “I’m different.” If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.”
“My journey of self-discovery and self-acknowledgement began in my hometown of Los Angeles and has taken me through two state high school championships, the NCAA Final Four and the Elite Eight, and nine playoffs in 12 NBA seasons.”
