We have heard of Susan Boyle here in the States of course, but you couldn’t imagine how huge she was in the UK around the time when she appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009. She was the biggest star in the country, even though she didn’t win in the end.
You would also not believe how nasty the British papers, magazines and pretty much everyone were when she became popular. They were knocking her left and right, calling her all kinds of names and constantly making jabs about her appearance.
Even those who were “on her side” did it in such an underhanded and condescending way that they were even worse. And sure, she looks like your average Scottish 50-something housewife (which is not a great look), but that was never what mattered.
