When you need someone to play the most evil person in the galaxy, you do not go to a good-looking man. You go to someone whose looks will fit the role and that is exactly what George Lucas did when he was casting the Emperor for his Star Wars universe. He casted Ian McDiarmid, a Scottish actor who really fits the bill.
In all honesty, the guy is not really that ugly and the Emperor’s horrifying look has more to do with the make-up people who worked on the Star Wars movies. Still, he did such a bang-up job that you cannot help but see him as the Emperor.
Ian is actually a fantastic actor with innumerable Shakespearean roles under his belt, as well as roles in more than 40 movies spanning decades.
