6. Ian McKellen
One of the greatest actors of all time, Ian McKellen publicly declared he was gay more than 25 years ago and has been an LGBT activist ever since. He has talked about his own experiences as a famous gay actor, supported and helped people struggling with their sexuality and fought for equal rights for all gay people in the world.
Despite coming out in 1988, McKellen said that he had always been openly gay. He recalled having several partners in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and confirmed that they had gone everywhere together and that they had, indeed, been accepted. However, he added that he had never dreamed of having a civil partnership, getting married, or even serving in the military. Here’s what he said:
‘’There we certain things we weren’t allowed to do and I’m afraid I rather went along with that because I was having a rather good time being an actor.”
