21 UK Celebs Who Survived Coming Out

12. Clare Balding

BBC sports presenter Clare Balding was so ecstatic to see Tom Daley coming out in a YouTube video that she said that she would have used the platform to tell the world she was gay 10 years ago if the site had been so visited and popular. Claire praised Tom for the way he announced his sexual preference to the world, and said she was especially proud because there was no marketing in the clip.

Apart from whole-heartedly supporting others, Clare should also be proud of herself. She entered a civil partnership with her partner, broadcaster Alice Arnold, in 2006 and refused to allow anyone to interfere with her relationship, even her close family. Namely, her grandmother didn’t support her choices, and Balding, tired of listening to the same old excuses, didn’t talk to her for about 6 months – until her grandma was ready to accept her and her partner.
