9. FEMI KUTI

The famous afrobeat and jazz musician was born as Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti in London but grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. His father Fela Kuti was one of the most important Nigerian musicians, the pioneer of afrobeat and a great fighter for civil rights.

When Femi was a boy, his parents split and his mother Remi took the child to live with her. Femi later moved to his father and learned to play several instruments, most notably saxophone. At the age of 15 he was already able to join his father’s band. Another thing he got from his father was a commitment to social issues and justice.

Femi gained notoriety among jazz and afrobeat fans early in his solo career but he became widely known in 2001 with the album Fight to Win on which he collaborated with musicians such as Jaguar Wright, Mos Def and Common. The album sold gold and was followed by several other successful albums. Today, Kuti is one of the most well-known and beloved musicians from Africa.
