19. YOUSSOU N’DOUR
Youssou N’Dour is one of the most famous Senegalese singers and at one point in the 1990’s he was perhaps the most famous singer of the whole of Africa. He was born in Dakar and started performing when he was only 12 years old. He was fortunate enough to start performing with Star Band, one of the most popular Senegalese bands in the 1970s.
This helped propel his career and by the late 1970s he formed his own band, Etoile de Dakar. He later formed Super Etoile de Dakar with other prominent Senegalese musicians. In the 1990s N’Dour was already a well-established musician who owned a recording studio and later even his own record company.
His mix of traditional mbalax music and Latin, jazz, hip-hop and soul music proved to be very successful and he was soon collaborating with great international music stars like Peter Gabriel, Neneh Cherry, Paul Simon, Brice Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Lou Reed and many others. In 2012, N’Dour became Senegal’s Minister of Tourism and Culture.
