16. SEETHER
Fans of Seether are surely aware of the fact that the band is from South Africa. Those who are only casually acquainted with this band probably think that they are American, because they are really big in the US, as well as in Europe and the rest of the world.
Seether may be the most successful South African rock band right now, and on the way to becoming the most popular one ever. The hard rock band was founded in Pretoria in 1999. The original name was Saron Gas, but since it sounded a lot like the name of the deadly nerve agent sarin gas, they decided to change it to Seether.
Their debut album Disclaimer came out in 2002 and it became an instant success, especially the single ”Fine Again,” which topped the US Active Rock chart. They reprised the success two years later with the single “Broken” featuring Amy Lee of Evanescence, which hit the twentieth position on the Billboard Hot 100. Other major hits for Seether include “Words as Weapons,” “Country Song,” “Fake It” and “Remedy.”
