12. ERNIE ELS
Ernie Els is a legendary South African golfer who is considered to be one of the best golf players of all times, alongside Tiger Woods. Many people don’t know that “The Big Easy,” as he is called due to his imposing stature and an elegant, fluid swing, is actually from South Africa. He currently resides in Western Cape, England and Florida.
Els was born in Johannesburg in 1969 and started playing golf when he was only eight years old. He gained notoriety in 1984 when the won the Junior World Golf Championship in the category of boys ages 13 and 14. He also became the youngest ever player to win the South African Amateur Championship when he was only 17.
Throughout his career he had 65 victories, including two U.S. Opens, in 1994 and 1997 and is one of six golfers ever to win U.S. Open and the Open Championship two times. In 2011 he was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Today, Els is retired and focuses his time and energy on helping disadvantaged children in South Africa to learn to play golf.
