Africa is a pretty big continent, yet it’s not really known for producing a lot of celebrities. Well, maybe it’s just the fact that there are tons of celebrities that you don’t even know come from Africa. Here is a list of famous people you might not know were born in Africa.
1. DAVE MATTHEWS
The American singer-songwriter, actor and guitarist, Dave Matthews is definitely one of the most popular figures in rock music today. In America, he is so widely popular that it may be difficult to imagine him being anything other than a home-grown rocker. However, Matthews wasn’t actually born in America – he was born in Johannesburg.
When Matthews was two years old, his family moved to the States, more specifically to Westchester County, New York, where his dad was working for IBM. The family spent a year in England and upon returning to the US his father died of cancer. The same year the family moved back to South Africa, where Dave graduated from St. Stithians College.
Matthews was happy to stay in South Africa, however having graduated he was up for military service. Raised as a Quaker, and consequently a pacifist, he had to leave the country to avoid service. He worked for IBM for a bit and then moved to Virginia, where his music career finally started.
