9. Steve McQueen

The “King of Cool” had a troubled childhood which greatly influenced his rebel image, one that would persist throughout his entire career. The son of a stunt pilot and an prostitute, he drifted from job to job before deciding to joing the Marines in 1947. His rebellious nature was apparent when he displayed difficulties with obeying the chain of command and because of that was demoted back to private seven times.

Additionally, he once let a weekend pass develop into a two week vacation with a girlfriend. Of course, they caught him, he resisted and spent 41 days inside (first three weeks living solely off of bread and water). But the time spent in there reshaped him. An exercise his unit was performing turned into a catastrophe as their ship hit a sandbank, throwing crew members into the water. Many drowned immediately but McQueen jumped in and saved the lives of five man. He was honorably discharged and in the end he has only good to say about his time spent in the Marines.
