8. Johnny Cash
Having just finished high school in 1950, Cash enrolled in the Air Force as the Korean War just began. He served most of his four years in Germany. The legendary country performer may be widely known right now as the “Man in Black”, but he was also once a man wearing blue Air Force colours. His musical aptitude helped him, as he was handy when it came to understanding Morse code. He served as an intercept operator with the USAF Security Service, and apparently was very good at it.
There are debates whether the military helped define Johnny the way we know him. He came from a poor family and was barely able to gather enough money to buy a guitar once he started getting paid. He even had a band while in the Air Force, and it was called The Landsberg Barbarians.
