21. Gene Hackman
Gene was born in California but his frequent family problems tossed him into a life of constant moving. When they finally settled in Danville, Illinois, his father left and his mother became an alcoholic. Unsuprisingly, at the age of 16 he decided to drop out of high school and join the Marines, despite being underage. Just like Sidney Poitier, he lied and made his way in.
A combination of his troubled life and creative sould pretty much paint a clear picture of what his army life looked like. He worked primarily as a radio operater, and yet found events where he could express himself creatively. On day he volunteered as a disc-jokey which turned into a permanent position which included newscasting. He went everywhere, from Tsing Tao to Shanghai, and he was later stationed in Hawaii. He was demoted three times for leaving his post without permission, and in general, he had a problem with obeying the hierarchy and his position in it.
