19. Leonard Nimoy
Live long and prosper!
Unfortunately, Nimoy’s personal records were mostly destroyed in a fire in 1973, but thanks to people who knew him and a few recorded pieces of evidence we are able to put together some kind of a story about his military career. He spent a total of 18 months in the Reserves, and most of his time he was stationed at Fort McPherson in Georgia. He was discharged in 1955 and he earned the rank of sergeant.
Nimoy was the main man in a platoon that just happened to include actor Ken Berry. They became close and Berry confined in Nimoy his wish to dance and perform, which Nimoy encouraged. Nimoy’s time in the military was about as standard as everyone else’s except that he spent much time putting on shows and entertaining the Army Special Services. He wrote the shows, narrated and emceed them.
