17. Clark Gable
Similar to Elvis Prisley, Clark already had a career which was sprouting at the time when he enlisted. But he joined of his own will (or the lack of will) seeing as his third wife passed away in an airplane crash in 1942. Clar was completely smashed by this situation and decided to join the Army Air Force. Although he was beyond the draft age, he enlisted as a private on August 12th, 1942 at Los Angeles.
He was assigned to the 351st Bomb Group at Polebrook, and even flew operational missions over Europe in B-17s, despite the fact that he was neither ordered nor expected to do so. What’s even more interesting was the fact that Hitler himself was aware of the fact that Clark Gable was in Europe during the war and offered a hefty amount of money for alive and unharmed capture. He must’ve seen his movies and wanted an autograph badly.
