16. Mel Brooks

Upon graduating from high school in 1944, the then 17-year-old Melvin Kaminsky enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was raised in poverty by his mother (his father died of kidney disease when Mel was just two years old) in tough Brooklyn neighborhoods. He ranked high in intelligence testing and was placed in the elite Army Specialized Training Program, sent to Virginia Military Institute and there learned skills such as military engineering, horsemanship and swordsmanship.

His elite program was shut down and he went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for regular basic training – he was then shipped to Europe in late 1944. There he was assigned to the 1104th Engineer Combat Group, just in time to participate in the Battle of the Bulge. Although he admits that he wasn’t really in the center of the chaotic action, it’s still pretty badass to picture a younger Mel Brooks disarming landmines.
