14. Sidney Poitier
Sidney moved to the United States from the Bahamas as a teenager and had a hard time finding work. Additionally, the different climate, especially New York’s chilling winters were a drastic and sudden change for the now Academy Award-winning actor. So, in 1943, just a couple of months away from turning 16, he lied about his age and enlisted in the army, which literally took him in out of the cold.
Now that he was in, the sky was the limit for Poitier. Except that it wasn’t. He served as a medical attendant at a mental hospital in New York, but soon became tired of the life he was leading. Guess he was just too young for all that, and immature. So, instead of admitting his real age and telling them how he got in, he pretended to be insane. Upon threats of shock treatments however, he told them the whole story and was eventually granted release.
