11. Humphrey Bogart
Humphrey is yet another high school drop-out, who had lost all interest in education and didn’t bother looking for new interests or finding a job. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1918 and was said to be a model sailor, spending most of his career transporting troops between the U.S. and Europe. He was stationed on the Leviathan but was transferred to the USS Santa Olivia. Somehow though, he managed to miss his ship when it was sailing for Europe.
But Humphrey’s an honest guy – he turned himself in to the Navy port authority almost immediately. Because of his decision, he was not deemed a deserter, but instead was recorded as being AWOL and he received his punishment of three days of solitary confinement. Not that bad, except that he couldn’t eat anything but bread and water. One thing that is important here is that he comes from a successful family. Upon returning to his family, he realized that his values have shifted from what his family expected. He loathed pretension and snobbery and went on to work simple jobs such as a shipper and a bond salesman until he eventually climbed into show business.
